This song is for Bárður Snæfellsás, the legendary protector of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. Bárður is half-troll and half-human, hence the title of this song. As told in the sagas, Bárður has an interesting and arduous life eventually living up on the Snæfellsjökull ice cap. He wanders the glaciers "in a grey cowl with a walrus-hide rope around him, and a cleft staff in his hand." Periodically, he descends to help people in times of need and, to this day, protects the west coast of Iceland.
