I’m fascinated with the Icelandic Staves, magical symbols that protect against external forces and steer destiny. I find them aesthetically pleasing, historically interesting, and charming/whimsical. As a wilderness traveler, my personal favorite is Vegvísir – this stave will guide you safely through rough weather. On our first trip to Iceland, we saw this stave periodically (carved into our bed headboard, etc.). When I asked about it, an older woman without much English described it as “Please don’t let me die in a blizzard tonight.”
Much of Iceland is a barren steep landscape with ice, snow, dark, wind, few landmarks, and little shelter. It’s an exposed place where getting lost and disappearing was (and is) an ongoing concern; it seems to happen fairly regularly in the Sagas. (In fact, we saw some places with big very old rock cairns that were for guiding people through the landscape before established roads.)
This song is dedicated to my friends who have been lost along the journey. May you always find your way home.
lyrics
It’s dark, always dark
Ice - wind - cold - dark
Move across that barren pass
Endless nights, there and back
Please don’t let me, let me die
In a blizzard, in a blizzard tonight
Please don’t let me, let me die
In a blizzard, in a blizzard tonight
Lure me on elusive form
Prudent shift, margins torn
Walk beyond that windblown track
Here to there, there and back
Please don’t let me, let me die
In a blizzard, in a blizzard tonight
Please don’t let me die...
In a blizzard tonight
