In fall and early winter of 2018, I lived for 6 weeks at the only remaining building left in the abandoned fishing village of Krossavík at the far west end of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. This barren volcanic coastal landscape has an endless series of sights, sounds, and changes – subtle and dramatic. Northern lights, daily rainbows, snow and sleet, gale force winds; kelp beds, great cormorants & snow white ptarmigan, seals, mink, arctic fox, washed up pilot whales; crashing waves, windblown grasses, shiny black basalt cliffs; abandoned docks, tragic shipwrecks. Sometimes peaceful, sometimes astonishing, sometime scary; predictive and restful but also startling and requiring your immediate and ongoing attention.
